Beneficiaries for Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment

All eligible employees must participate in Group Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) plans through the Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan (ASEBP).  Participation is a condition of employment, therefore an employee cannot refuse coverage.

Designating a Beneficiary

Beneficiary information is requested on the group enrollment form completed by the employee during the initial benefit enrollment.  The designated beneficiary is entitled to the proceeds payable under the Life Insurance and AD&D plans.  The employee may list more than one beneficiary and a trustee must be appointed for any beneficiaries under 18 years of age.  If more than one beneficiary is listed the employee has to decide the percentage payable to each beneficiary.

If the beneficiary(s) predecease the employee, the employee may decide if the unclaimed portion should be divided among the beneficiaries left or revert to their estate.

Employees may change beneficiary information at any time.  All changes must be made in person in Benefits/Human Resource Services by appointment only.  Any change made to the designation of beneficiary(s) will supercede any previous designation.
