Protocol for the Management of Human Rights Complaints

Background

Human Rights legislation was passed to ensure provincial consistency with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well as Canadian Human Rights legislation. These pieces of legislation enshrine our ability to work and live without fear of discrimination or unwanted harassment as defined in the Codes. Alberta legislation outlines the process individuals can take to have issues resolved, the powers of the Human Rights Board as well as the remedies that can be applied against those who violate another's Human Rights. Recipients of written complaints can include individuals as well as organizations such as our School Board. Human Rights do not issue verbal complaints.

Human Rights transgressions are inconsistent with the process of Education and are contrary to our philosophies and beliefs. However, it is also vital that we manage complaints filed against employees and/or our School Board to ensure complaints are legitimate and that our best interests are maintained.
